Indotel announces plan to expand broadband

SD. The president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), Gedeon Santos, announced a plan to expand broadband through the deployment of a national fiber-optic network, in those areas where Internet service does not exist, or whether the signal is precarious in order to provide connectivity and telecommunications services to all the population.

The official made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the "First Multisector Forum A4AI in the Dominican Republic" which the Alliance for an Affordable Internet Foundation organized together with Indotel, at that Barcelo Hotel in Santo Domingo.

During the opening ceremony the executive director of the Alliance for and Affordable Internet Foundation (A4AI), Sonia Jorge, spoke to the crowd and emphasized the interest of this training institution in the National Multisector or Coalition for an Affordable Internet in the Dominican Republic.

In the meantime, Santos reported in his speech that Indotel will carry out within the framework of its bi-annual plan, "the liberation and reorganization of the radio spectrum through the implementation of Digital Television programed for 2015."

He said that the regulatory agency contemplated offering "more and better opportunities for access to the TIC, in order for the population to be able to take advantage of information and communication technologies (TIC). He noted that in the urban areas only 52% of the population uses the Internet, and in the rural areas 28%, according to Enhogar 2013.
