Public Works admits problems with Santo Domingo Beltway
SANTO DOMINGO. The Minister of Public Works, Gonzalo Castillo, admitted yesterday the traffic inconveniences originated in the Santo Domingo Beltway at the intersection with the Sanchez Highway were caused by the provisional traffic lights, which according to what he said, will be withdrawn. He reported that technicians from this ministry are studying the case in order to solve the traffic jams.

He said that it is true that they redesigned the Cloverleaf that had originally been proposed in order to lower the cost of the projects because of problems with expropriations. He said that it is the responsibility of the Ministry that he leads to take care of the people's money.

As he took part in the meeting "Public Works for the Welfare of the People" which was organized by the Communication Directorate of the Presidency, the official said that part of the problem came about because they wanted to respect the design of the project, which consists of an operational U-turn some 600 m from the exit from the road.

"When you are going from East to West on the Sanchez Highway, before crossing the Beltway, there is an access ramp which leads then to the North and that 600 m later there is this operational U-turn in which you can turn comfortably without interfering in the traffic that is moving at the design velocity of 100 km/h and return to Haina," he explained.

He reported that the technicians from Public Works will find solutions to the problem, not only building projects, if they are necessary, but also, with the traffic signs, and the closure with walls.

He indicated that the instructions were that the four traffic lights that created the traffic jam should be withdrawn. He also said that they are searching for a solution to the demand for access by residents of several communities which were allegedly cut off by the Beltway.
