PLD convenes meeting of its Political Committee for next Thursday
SANTO DOMINGO. After nearly seven months without meeting, the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) was convened for next Thursday, at a time in which the top leaders of the government party, followers of President Danilo Medina, have requested that the body discuss the issue of constitutional modifications which would permit reelection and the fact that former President Leonel Fernandez is out in the streets promoting his aspirations to return to power in the 2016 elections.

The invitation of the Political Committee (CP) was announced yesterday "formally" by the PLD secretary-general, Reinaldo Pared Perez on his Twitter account @ ReinaldoPared and later confirmed in a press release sent by the Secretariat of Communications of the official party.

The first ordinary meeting of this executive body of the Central Committee of the PLD this year, is set for 8:00 p.m., this Thursday, at the Presidential House located on Dr. Piñeyro St in the University Area.

In its last meeting, held on Monday, September 1, 2014, with the attendance of 32 of his 35 members, the CP made one "last revision" to the final report presented by a commission of jurists and leaders of the party organization regarding the Proposal of the Law of Parties and Political Groups, among other issues. At that time, there was a new convocation for September 15, but this was postponed without a new date.

Regarding the agenda of the meeting the press release says that "it is an ordinary meeting and as such, the issues will be presented by the coordination of the body as well as those that are placed on the table with the approval of the attendees will also be dealt with."

Request and ineffectiveness

In the midst of the ineffectiveness of the Political Committee, the Minister of Public Administration, Ramon Ventura Camejo, said that the debate on a constitutional reform in order to permit a second presidential term cannot be put off anymore. This is a proposal which he expects to take to the meeting on Thursday, as he had promised to do "in the next meeting" last October.

In the meantime, the Judicial Consultant of the Executive Power and also a member of the CP suggested that it makes no sense to belong to an political body, such as this if it does not meet" and at the same time he denied that "the issue of reelection has made the committee ineffective."

In the heat of these statements the proselytizing activities in favor of the reelection and those that promote the Fernandez project have increased all over the country in recent days.

Primaries

Article 43 of the PLD statutes established that "the primary elections will be led by a National Electoral Commission, composed of a coordinator chosen by the Political Committee among its members, the heads of the Secretariat of Organization and Electoral Affairs and four members of the Central Committee chosen by that body."
