Sanchez and Paulino: Man and Woman of the Year

SANTO DOMINGO. The Diario Libre celebrated last night during a gala dinner at the Hotel El Embajador the award ceremony for the "Man and Woman of the Year 2014." This year's distinction was presented to the president of the "Wrinkled Hands" Foundation (Manos Arrugadas), Gianni Paulino and the National Coordinator of the Program of Small Subsidies (PPS) of the United Nations, Alberto Sanchez.

Finalists Oscar Villanueva, of the "Love Me As I Am" Foundation (Quiéreme Como Soy); Olga Altman, the psychologist of the "I Love Myself" project (Yo Me Amo); Maria Magdalena Rosario, of the "Milena's Children School" (Escuela los Hijos de Milena): and Victor Atallah, of the VEA organization also received awards.

In the same order, Maria Isabel Serulle, of the Pediatric Foundation For a Tomorrow; Pedro Martinez, of the "Pedro Martinez and Brothers" Foundation; Juan Oviedo, the President of the Oviedo Foundation and Rosalia Carvajal, a volunteer in several philanthropic programs were also presented with the small statues.

The president of the Diario Libre Group, Arturo Pellerano, and the director of this newspaper, Adriano Miguel Tejada were the hosts for the presentation of the awards.

Upon receiving his award, Sanchez gave thanks to the team which made it possible for the PPS to improve the quality of life of rural and impoverished communities.

During her words of appreciation offered Gianni Paulino, the President of the Wrinkled Hands Foundation issued a call to President Danilo Medina in order that the National Plan for the Elderly be approved, and thereby be able to bring hope to the oldest sector of the population.

About the winners

A jury composed of Doctor Radhames Mejia, the rector of the Apec University; Altagracia Paulino, the executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Comsumidor); José Rafael Lantigua, the former minister of Culture; as well as the director of the Diario Libre, Adriano Miguel Tejada, and the deputy director of the newspaper Ines Aizpun, chose the winners.

Alberto Sanchez was recognized for the work carried out in 2014, as he accompanied more than 25 communities in the installation and start up of 10 micro - hydroelectric generators which produced between 10 kW and 150 kW in different isolated and poor communities. In addition he also assisted other communities in the process of installation of 15 new micro - generators.

At the same time, Gianni Paulino obtained her prize for her constant work in favor of the elderly of the Dominican Republic, which included the construction of a nursing home and the development of several awareness campaigns.
