Political parties suspend activities for Holy Week

They issue a call to their membership for reflection and participation in operations

SANTO DOMINGO. With the arrival of Holy Week, the principal political parties of the country announced the suspension of their activities and called on the population to not incur in excesses as well as to take advantage of these days for reflection.

The announcement was made by the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and the Social Christian Reformist Party (PR SC), who separately asked their membership and sympathizes to join in the religious activities and in the efforts to prevent accidents carried out by authorities and relief agencies.

The PLD, through a press communiqué, asked the population to not go overboard and to accept the recommendations by the authorities with the aim of avoiding the loss of life.

"To those that have commitments in the churches and parishes, go and assist in the temples for the commemoration of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, which is the event which originated the Holy Week," cites the letter.

The PRD, through its president Miguel Vargas, said that this week should be used to rethink formulas and methods that help us to have a country living in peace and with more generosity.

"In attention to the inspiration and motivation of these reflections the political activities of the PRD are suspended during the Holy Week, which should be used by the people for a retreat, for reflection and to join in the religious activities of the occation," said the man who is also a presidential candidate.

Federico Antun Batlle, the PR SC President, said that this is a time of reflection and spiritual recollection, and so he called upon the candidates to congressional and municipal offices from his party to suspend their political activism during the Holy Week.

"We should reflect for at least three minutes a day on the three fundamental values: be responsible parents and respectful children; the caring for our closest neighbors and to be fair in the decisions that we must take," he noted.
