Vice President: In the DR we are working to avoid salary inequality
SD. The Vice President of the Republic, Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez yesterday recognized that Dominican women are being discriminated against through their salary levels, and she said that from government, as well as the business community and the unions they are working to establish public policies which contribute to the elimination of the current differences.

"The truth is that we cannot understand why a woman has to receive a lesser salary than a man, when she has the same capability, carries out the same work, and occupies the same position," the Vice President said as she spoke of gender-based salary bias.

She stressed that the government maintains a constant analysis of the situation, and that it is working together with the business community and the unions towards putting an end to the root causes of this distortion. "In this sense we are also working with the creation of a gender basis for public policies, where we can achieve this equality and inclusion of the woman."

She said that Dominican women are ever more empowered and prepared, which can be seen because it is the women who are occupying the greatest number of chairs in the universities and positions in primary education.

"So what we have to do is to continue strengthening those spaces and continue creating other spaces in order that we can continue inserting ourselves. There are also some new and very good niches in which we can take part, such as information technology and communication, and there is where I think that we women have a great opportunity, because women are very creative, organized, systematic, and well structured," Cedeño indicated.

The Vice President of the Republic expressed yourself in these terms before her participation in the act celebrating the 28th anniversary of the National Association of Women Executives, Business Women and Professionals (Anmepro), where the executive director of Proindustria, Alexandra Izquierdo, presented the conference "The Women and the men in political participation: Leadership for strengthening democracy."

Izquierdo said that in spite of the fact that there is a law which establishes a minimum quota of 33% on the election ballots for the Chamber of Deputies, of 190 seats in that legislative body, only 40 belong to women, equal to 21%.

During the activity, which was attended by distinguished personalities, in the majority women, but with an outstanding masculine presence, they gave the highest Anmepro award to the Vice President of the Republic.

The grand prize "Doctor Josefina Espaillat Nanita" was awarded to Fiordaliza Martinez de Valdez. The Association also recognized Alexandra Izquierdo, Laura Peña, Luisa Maria de Aquino, Trina Blandino and Maritza Lopez de Ortiz who received the Anmepro "Medal of Merit."

The Anmepro president, Fior Rodriguez de Ranucoli, said that the entity is composed of 300 women, and that among the principal challenges which they have are the difficulties for accessing credit, while at the same time she felt that the entities should establish fewer requirements for financing.

Central Bank: DR will experience strong growth

The Governor of the Central Bank (BC), Hector Valdez Albizu, said that the Dominican economy will experience strong growth in the first quarter of this year. "Everything looks that we are going to have a very auspicious quarter and with strong growth," said the official during the event of the women during which his wife was recognized and received an award. In addition Valdez Albizu foresaw that in relation to the historically high prices reached by the price of oil last year, in the future this cost will continue being lower.
