Truckers decide not to enter Haiti because of problems
DAJABON. Shippers which arrived with their trucks all loaded with merchandise from several points in the country refused yesterday to cross into Haiti, given the recurrence of the protests by rebel groups who are calling for changes in the government of President Michel Martelli.

Geovanny Escoto, the Secretary-General of the Truckers Syndicate affiliated to the National Federation of Dominican Transportation (Fenatrado), reported that between 20 and 30 loaded trucks could not enter Haitian territory because of the street protests that were being carried out in Juana Mendez (Ouanaminthe), Gilea and Fort Liberté.

Likewise, he reported that several trucks that carried textiles from Juana Mendez towards Puerto Plata, also could not cross into Dominican territory. According to the reports, members of the United Nations Special Mission of Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), had to call for reinforcements in order to contain the demonstrators. Both the National Police of Haiti as well as the members of the Minustah fired tear gas grenades and shots into the air in order to disperse the demonstrators, who burned tires, placed obstacles on the roads, and attacked vehicles and their drivers that carried merchandise.

Between Monday and Tuesday, the protest of the rebel groups in Haiti left a tragic balance of the death of Sergeant Rodrigo Andres Sanhueza, from Chile, and they wounded a Haitian police officer.

Market

According to residents in Dajabon, it is very possible that the by - national market which is held every Monday and Friday, will not be held, because of the instability prevailing in Haitian territory.

Among other demands, the rebel groups call for water, electricity, street repairs, and highways, as well as jobs and the construction of schools and hospitals.
