The PLD will submit a Constitutional reform for the re-nomination of Danilo
The CP appoints a commission to prepare the modification proposal to allow Medina to aspire in 2016

JUAN DOLIO, SPM. After considering the high levels of popularity which the administration of President Danilo Medina as well as the President himself enjoy, the Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) approved yesterday the preparation of a legislative proposal for a constitutional reform in order that the Chief of State will be able to opt for a new period in the next elections.
The decision was approved by a majority of votes, according to the report given during a press conference by Reinaldo Pared Perez, the Secretary-General of the PLD, in the conference room of the Metro Country Club, where the PLD's leadership body met yesterday.
The spokesman of the government's party also said that it was unanimously decided to suspend discussion of the calendar of the internal nomination process, and wait for the results of what this reform to the Constitution could be in order to permit the consecutive presidential reelection, such as the system in the United States.
With the aim of preparing the legislative proposal which would convene the National Assembly in order to reform the Magna Carta, the CP appointed a commission composed of, besides Pared Perez, who will be the coordinator, Abel Martinez and Cristina Lizardo, the heads of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, respectively. Also included in the commission are Lidio Cadet, and deputies Radhames Camacho, and Miriam Cabral and the former Vice President of the Republic, Rafael Alburquerque the only one of the commissioners who did not accompany the PLD spokesman at the press conference.
Regarding whether they established a deadline for the commission to deliver the legislative proposal, the Secretary-General of the PLD said that it would be "opportunely" and that regarding the voting, Pared Perez limited his comments to say that it was approved by a majority, and that he could not say "who voted in favor or against" the decision.
"This is to say, we are going to introduce this change in the present Constitution, in order to be able to make it possible for President Danilo Medina to opt for the candidacy in the next elections," he indicated.
Nonetheless, Pared Perez insisted that first they have to submit the legislative proposal that will convene the National Assembly and that everything is going to depend "on what happens with this proposal, if it becomes law and the National Assembly is convened, then we will go on to the second phase."
Possible insubordination
When asked if there were any dissident voices that did not accept the position of the executive body regarding presidential reelection, and the fact that near the place (of the CP meeting) there were deputies who follow Leonel waiting for the results of the meeting, Pared Perez was emphatic when he indicated that "there was a decision of the Political Committee. From there forward, the Political Committee through its mechanisms will report on and direct this process."
Voted against
Reports obtained by the Diario Libre indicate that voting against the proposal were Leonel Fernandez, Rafael Alburquerque, Franklin Almeyda, Radhames Jimenez, the the Vice President of the Republic, Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez, Julio César Valentín, Abel Martinez, César Pina Toribio and Bautista Rojas Gomez.
All 35 members attended the meeting
During the debates close to 20 of the members of the CP took part. The meeting was held with the complete membership of 35 PLD leaders.
The only issue dealt with during the meeting, which began at 10:35 a.m., and finished at 5:10 p.m., was the letter sent by Ramon Ventura Camejo, on 9 September 2014, in which he asked the committee to think about the issue of a constitutional reform in order to allow presidential reelection. In order to cover the incidents of the event, 150 accreditations were issued for reporters, photographers, cameramen and employees of the media.
Hector Olivo, the Secretary for Communications of the PLD, reported that Pared Perez led the debates at the request of party president, Leonel Fernandez. The motion was seconded by President Danilo Medina. The proposal had the unanimous vote of the members of the leadership body of the Purple Party.
The future of the pre-candidates
Reinaldo Pared Perez, who is also an aspiring presidential candidate, said that the future of his candidacy and of the other aspiring candidates will depend on the outcome of the proposal for a constitutional reform which the PLD will present. Also aspiring to head the purple ballot are Temistocles Montas, Radhames Segura, Francisco Javier Garcia, and the followers of the governments party and former President Leonel Fernandez are promoting his candidacy to be president for a fourth time.
