Constitutional Tribunal to debate today two cases against abortion

SD. The Constitutional Tribunal (TC) will hear today two direct appeals of unconstitutionality against the Penal Code, which seek to eliminate four articles and that open the possibility in order for abortion to be permitted.

The Catholic Church requested yesterday that God would illuminate the 13 judges of the high court in order that they decide in favor of life. The Church feels that life starts from conception and lasts until death.

The TC is set to hear the cases at 9:00 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court of Justice. The Happy Matrimony Foundation says that the modifications included by the Executive Power violate article 37 regarding the right to life.

They requested that the expression "except what is ordered in article 110," relating to the exceptions of interruptions of pregnancies be declared unconstitutional.

They pointed out that the manner, in which the Chamber of Deputies approved the observations by the Executive in relation to abortion, was by "ignoring the constitutional rule that the modification of the text should be approved by both chambers."

In the meantime, the Justice and Transparency Foundation called for annulling articles 107, 108, 109 and 110 of Law 550 - 14, which institutes the reform, "because it is riddled with irregularities and violations, both in the legislative procedure for dealing with the observations by the Executive Power, as well as the content of the ordinances."
