Legislators that support a reform would be re-nominated
SANTO DOMINGO. "Reelection for reelection" is one of the proposals that is being mentioned to facilitate an agreement between President Danilo Medina and former President Leonel Fernandez that would facilitate the constitutional reform and permit presidential reelection for a consecutive period.

The offer is from the supporters of Medina for the legislators that follow Leonel who refused to accept the decision of the Political Committee to modify the Magna Carta in order for President Medina to be re-nominated for the 2016 elections.

One of those who favors this proposal is the Minister of Industry and Commerce, José Del Castillo Saviñon, who pointed out that he would even sacrifice his own aspirations for the Senate seat from Barahona in order to reach an agreement between the PLD sectors. "It is probable that what they suggest is that reelection would be guaranteed, or at least the nomination for the position, because the election is done by the voter in May of next year, but at least the nomination of those who today serve as senators and as deputies of the PLD would be guaranteed," he specified.

The official estimated that the legislators who oppose the decision by the Political Committee are risking consideration during an internal process or in the elections of 2016, since they assured reporters that they would act against the desire of the majority which Del Castillo Saviñon understands to be the reelection of Medina.

Del Castillo Saviñon defined the President as the sure way for the PLD to triumph in 2016 and he said that any other road would be "an adventure". "I am a PLD soldier and regarding any element which permits an agreement which allows the modification of the Constitution in order to facilitate the reelection of President Danilo Medina which is the desire of the majority of the population, I will be a facilitator," he declared.

Offer is rejected

However, this offer is rejected by the legislators that follow Leonel Fernandez, such as deputy Demostenes Martinez, who said that the reason they oppose a constitutional reform is not to guarantee positions or candidacies.

"This does not contribute in a positive manner to those who have plans for changing the Constitution because it would be very out of keeping for the National Congress if we lend ourselves to a negotiation of this magnitude," he underlined.

Martinez stressed that what would be valid for the legislators is if there were an agreement between the leaders of the PLD who are Fernandez and Medina.

"No matter what the decision is that they take, which is to say in exchange for something, but those two are the ones who should take it. What we are not in agreement on is the lack of consideration to one of them, for us this is not negotiable," he indicated.

There are several provinces in which the followers of Danilo Medina are fighting for the senatorial nomination with followers of Leonel Fernandez, such as Dajabon with Olgo Fernandez, the director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), and the current Senator Sonia Mateo, who follows Fernandez.

Rumors in the Congress

Few dared to talk yesterday about the stories that they are offering things in exchange for a favorable vote regarding reelection, although many said out loud that they are not for sale and that nobody should dare to offer them anything.

However, Deputy Minou Tavarez, who expressed her rejection of the attempt at reelection, mentioned the rumors that she had heard in the Congress... "I have heard rumors that are circulating which offer State projects, that are guaranteeing nominations," but as she said, until now they are just rumors.
