Luis Abinader began to knock on doors for an opposition front
SANTO DOMINGO. The presidential candidate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Luis Abinader, assured reporters yesterday that he has begun approaching about 95% of the opposition leaders in order to construct an opposition political front that will take part in the 2016 elections.

The recently elected opposition candidate by the PRM said that one of his advantages is that he doesn't have enemies in any political party, although he might have differences in their positions regarding the problems of the country.

He emphasized that he will not rest until he unifies all of the opposition, without discriminating against any political organization.

The political leader spoke as he received in his office the congratulations of Geanilda Vasquez, who assured him that she would join him "as a warrior" in the campaign by Abinader and that she will work more than if this was her own campaign.

Abinader revealed that this afternoon he will meet with the organizations of the Convergence Coalition, of which the PRM forms a part. It is expected that they will deal with issues relating to the presidential candidate of this bloc.

The new presidential candidate now has to bring together the forces that make up the Convergence, and others that might be arriving.

The enigma of the vice president

One challenge which Abinader faces, and which might be a positive headache is to decide which sector will provide his candidate (male or female) for the vice presidency.

One of the figures that is being mentioned is Carolina Mejia, the daughter of former President Hipolito Mejia; another is a figure which might come from an agreement with the Dominican Revolutionary Party; or one from an emerging force such as Guillermo Moreno.

Sanz calls for closing ranks

The Senate hopeful from the National District for the PRM, Eduardo Sanz Lovaton, is of the opinion that with the triumph of Abinader the possibility is open to go forward with unifying the opposition which will permit bringing together the different sectors in a democratic cluster denominated "A Convergence for a better country."

He said that the Abinader victory supposes a step forward in the construction of a democracy, which in his understanding the country needs.

"Luis Abinader is the natural candidate for the needed social conquests in the country. The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has maintained its indifference regarding health, the quality of education, the housing problems, poverty and the social inequality, the corruption and impunity," he said.
