Proposal to reform the Constitution will go to a Senate commission today

SD. The legislative proposal to convene the National Revising Assembly, in order to modify the Constitution, and allow the consecutive reelection will be sent to a special commission.

The proposal was introduced into the Upper Chamber which is totally controlled by the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), but they are divided, polarized in opinions in favor of and against the modification.

The differences have been brought up ever since the process regarding how the proposal should be approved, whether by a simple majority, or with a two thirds majority of those present, was discussed. There were even questions regarding party discipline within the PLD.

The vice president of the Senate and opponent to the modification of the Constitution, Francis Vargas, said yesterday that "the position of 15 Senators (in opposition) continues. We are in disagreement with this constitutional reform, so that we are ratifying our position," he said yesterday.

Senator Euclides Sanchez said: "I understand that in compliance with congressional bureaucracy it is going to be sent to a commission, and the commission will study it, and present a report which without any doubt, is going to be favorable for its approval. You know that it is normal for every legislative proposal to be sent to commission, and you (the reporters) are the first ones that question this when a legislative proposal is approved without going to a commission, so I understand you, and this is what is best for all members of the PLD, to the legislators, so that we accept and respect the decision of the Political Committee."

In the meantime, Dionis Sanchez, the Senator for Pedernales, indicated that "Reinaldo said that they are dealing with an organic law, the exact words from someone who for me has the most qualifications in this sense because he is a good jurist, and for being the person who led the Assembly that modified the Constitution in which this was established, and he said out loud that this is an organic law. For me, the most qualified person is Reinaldo Pared Perez, and he said that it is an organic law," he argued.

Deputy Gustavo Sanchez recalled when Spanish King Juan Carlos "said to Chavez: ‘Why don't you shut up?' I could say this to all the comrades: Why don't you be quiet, and let this flow because of the good judgment that is represented by the leadership of the party, the comrades Danilo Medina and Leonel Fernandez," he said.
