Medical societies call for calm regarding Influenza A
The flu caused one death and another case is confirmed. The grippe increases

SANTO DOMINGO. The presidents of the Dominican societies of Pneumology and Infectology recommended yesterday, separately, that the population not become alarmed over the outbreak of Type A influenza that affects the country, because, in spite of the fact that it is a stronger virus then the common grippe, it does not cause complications in patients that do not have any chronic or underlying illness.
Talia Flores and Freddy Abad explained that the respiratory infection can be serious in immune- depressed patients, which is to say those that suffer from cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Florez said that the identification that has been made cannot be a cause of alarm, and what is most important is to wash your hands and maintain hygiene in the general sense.
She said that ideally the persons should be vaccinated between October and November, the time in which the virus also attacks, and as a preventive measure, in order to avoid outbreaks such as the current one.
She recommended that persons affected with this or any other grippe-like process should avoid crowded places, and cover their mouths and noses with their elbow when they sneeze in order to avoid contaminating others, since its transmission is by air, through breathing.
For his part, the pneumologist (also known as a pulmonologist), Freddy Abad, said that the difference between the "A" type influenza and the common grippe is that the general discomfort caused by the flu is stronger and that, except with chronic patients, and it can cause complications and death.
Another difference that is noticeable is that this type of virus can be detected by clinical analysis, which allows for a better and more opportune diagnosis.

The Minister of Public Health, Altagracia Guzman Marcellino, said that starting in November and December they have given vaccines against influenza to more than 300,000 persons, to groups at risk, among them the elderly, pregnant women and persons with underlying diseases.
Regarding the man who died in La Romana, she said that he worked with air-conditioning and suffered from an enlarged heart which made him vulnerable to the disease.
Regarding the woman, she said that she works in a health center, and that she did not properly take care of a common grippe, besides being diabetic and hypertensive.
She recommended that persons who have not been vaccinated to go to Street 28 at the corner of Street 39 in the Ensanche La Fe.
She reminded reporters that the flu is a virus which changes, and that the country is prepared to buy a new vaccine which comes on the market between June and July, while they use the vaccine that they have right now.

The President of the Dominican Medical College (CMD), Pedro Sing, called on the medical societies of pediatricians, Infectologists and pneumologists to join in orienting the population in order to avoid the spread of the virus.
He said that there is no motive for alarm, because they see the outbreak of this virus every two years in the country in its different types.
In the meantime, the deputy director of the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital, Clemente Terrero, said that in the last few days there has been an increase in patients with respiratory problems and that this has forced them to beef up the out-patient services with medical residents.
