Doctors begin today a 48 hour national work stoppage
With this strike, Pedro Sing breaks his promise of no strikes during his term of office

SANTO DOMINGO. The Dominican Medical College (CMD) called for a national work stoppage of 48 hours, starting today, due to the precarious situation which they say they find the public hospitals of the North West Line.
The President of the CMD, Pedro Sing, made the announcement, after the board of directors of the College met in Mao, Valverde and decreed the strike in all of the medical centers in the public network.
The president of the Medical College denounced the fact that the hospitals Luis E. Bogaert, in Mao; General Santiago Rodriguez, in Santiago Rodriguez; Ramon Matias Mella, in Dajabon, and Padre Fantino in Montecristi, suffer from a lack of specialists, show deterioration in the areas of surgery, births, orthopedics, hospitalization and consultation, and the remodeling never seems to end.
The doctors will maintain emergency services and attention to critical patients.
Sing assured reporters that the calamitous and needy conditions exist in all the nation's hospitals, but in the case of those on the North West Line the situation is dramatic.
"We have exhausted all the resources, such as the delivery in writing of the needs, meetings with the authorities, vigils, marches, demands through the media, for three months without so far having even minimum solutions," alleges the CMD.
When Pedro Sing was sworn in as president of the CMD, one of his commitments was to relegate strike movements and substitute them for negotiations.
Public Health
The Director General of National Health Services (SNS), Ramon Alvarado, reported that the remodeling and equiping of the national and regional reference hospitals are a priority for the government and the health authorities, and there is no delay in the process in the different hospitals, but rather the fact of maintaining the services active impedes accelerating the completion of the work.
He said that recently he met with President Danilo Medina, governmental authorities, directors of the CMD, administrative personnel and doctors from the hospitals of the North West Line in order to deal with the situation so that the doctors do not paralyze their labor.
With reference to the appointment of specialists, he said that they are proceeding to appoint personnel that are from the same provinces in order to guarantee that they comply totally with their service. He also reiterated that President Medina ordered the prioritizing of the national and regional hospitals of reference.
