Pope asks Dominican bishops for attention regarding Haitians
It is inexcusable, he added, "not to promote initiatives of brotherhood and peace between both nations"

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis asked yesterday the bishops of the Dominican Republic to give particular attention to the immigrants from Haiti, as he received their "Ad Limina" (On the threshold) visit, which each Bishop carries out every five years to give an account of the state of his dioceses.

"The pastoral and charitable attention regarding the immigrants, above all those coming from the neighboring country of Haiti, who seek better living conditions in Dominican territory, do not allow the indifference of the pastors of the Church," he said.

He indicated that "it is necessary to continue collaborating with the civilian authorities in order to reach caring solutions to the problems of those who are deprived of documents or who are denied their basic rights."

It is inexcusable, he added, "not to promote initiatives of brotherhood and peace between both nations, which make up this beautiful Caribbean island."

"It is important to know how to integrate the immigrants into the society and accept them in the ecclesiastical community. I appreciate that you are near them and all those who suffer," he affirmed.

He said that he knew that "your efforts and worries to adequately deal with the serious problems that affect our peoples, such as drug trafficking and human trafficking, corruption, domestic violence, the abuse and exploitation of minors or the social insecurity."
