Police chief calls for more consequences for cell phone thieves
Recently two persons have died during assaults to steal cell phones

SANTO DOMINGO. The Chief of Police declared yesterday that elevating "the level of consequences" for the criminals who steal cell phones would reduce the number of thefts of these apparatus. The theft of cell phones has become a problem for society.
According to the Chief of the Police, Manuel Castro Castillo, what usually happens is that persons involved in these thefts go free very easily.
"We arrest those who buy them and those who steal them, but they go free easily. There should be greater consequences for both parties and these should be revised. If the levels of the consequences are raised, then the crimes are reduced. The Police arrest a great number of young persons who, in order to consume drugs, go out and steal cell phones. And, usually whoever resists are attacked," he said.
The last victim of these incidents was Luis Antonio Medrano Reyes, 24, who was shot during an assault in the Fernandez Urbanization in Santiago in order to steal his cell phone.
Last week the former ballplayer with the New York Mets, Victor Liriano, was shot and killed in an incident that occurred in Madre Vieja in San Cristobal.
In Barrios of Santo Domingo the complaints of assaults for stealing cell phones are increasing and persons such as Angel Castro, a resident in the sector of La Pluma, in Guerra, complained that he has also been a victim of an assault to steal his cell phone.
Experts in technology indicate that the only manner in which the theft can be avoided is by placing in each cell phone a secret code which keeps it from being reactivated. This is the position of Hiddekei Morrison, a candidate for deputy to the Dominican Congress.
Nevertheless, Castro Castillo calls for raising "the level of consequences against the persons who steal cell phones and for those who buy them."
He admitted also that "crime is a reality in the Dominican Republic." "This cannot be hidden, but we are giving our best efforts in order that each day, we put a halt to this wave of criminal activity," said the Police Chief.
