Groups will sign "The Santiago Commitment for Security"

Some 56 institutions of the province are worried over the increase in violence

SANTIAGO. Worried by the high lack of security which the city of Santiago is experiencing, the 56 public and private institutions will release on Thursday a document called "The Santiago Declaration of Commitment for security," during a public act to be held in the Centro León at 6:30 in the afternoon.

Juan Ramirez, the president of the Vanessa Foundation, indicated that this declaration is the result of an inclusive, transparent and participatory process which has been going on since last April, led by the members of institutions of business, civil society and the government, which have come together to achieve this objective.

Saul Abreu, the executive director of the Santiago Development Association, said that they are worried about the incidents of violence and criminal activity that are happening in the province.

He said that it is necessary for the agencies of state and civil society to coordinate prompt actions in order to reduce crime to the lowest possible level. Abreu said that if there is no public safety, the people not only are afraid to leave their homes to enjoy themselves, but also even to work or study.

In the last 25 days, in the city of Santiago eight persons have died violently, among them two young men killed to steal their cell phones, as well as merchants who had previously been assaulted or robbed. Among the entities signing the declaration are the Association of Merchants and Industrialists of Santiago (ACI S), INFOTEP, the Santiago Development Association (Apedi) the Council for Strategic Development Plan of Santiago, the Association of Municipal Police, Santiago Somos Todos (We are all Santiago), the Association for the Development of Cienfuegos (Adecuci), Codosur, the Central Cibao Alliance Foundation and the Foundation All for Health.
