PLD convenes Central Committee to nominate Danilo as their presidential candidate
SANTO DOMINGO. The Political Committee of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) approved last night the convening of their Central Committee in order to nominate their candidates for the presidency of the Republic, although it is a given that only President Danilo Medina will run. The meeting will be a mere formality for the selection of the President to head the ticket of the government party.

At the conclusion of the meeting which went from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., Reinaldo Pared Perez, the Secretary-General of the PLD, reported that in addition, during the meeting they appointed Lidio Cadet as the coordinator of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), which will direct the internal nomination process that will choose the candidates on the purple ticket at all levels: presidential, congressional, and municipal.

The CNE will also include Pared Perez, Felix Bautista, the secretary of Organization, and Danilo Diaz, the secretary for Electoral Affairs. It will be filled out to seven members as required by the PLD statutes, during the meeting of the CC.

In a similar manner, the Political Committee will meet again on 17 July in order to take any decision with respect to the meeting of the top leadership organization which will be carried out the following day at 10:00 in the morning, in the new Meeting Hall at the National House, located on Independencia Avenue.

Commissioners Cadet, Bautista and Diaz will present to the Political Committee a calendar with the activities for the selection of the different candidates that they will present in the internal nomination process.

The three stages

Pared Perez explained that the selection process of candidates involves three stages: the first is the nomination, which is up to the Central Committee; the second, the election by the whole party to comply with what is established by the Electoral Law and, third, the official proclamation of the candidates during an activity.

"Since it is a given that our candidate will be comrade Danilo Medina we have to comply with the statutory exactitude and requirement, that it is the Central Committee which carries out the appointment," said Pared Perez.

Upon being questioned regarding whether another aspiring candidate had the right to present himself before the official party organs, he answered that every PLD member had the right to aspire to the elective position which he felt convenient, but that good behavior and prudence, and above all, common sense indicates, that it is a given that comrade Danilo Medina will be the party's presidential candidate."

Commission for pact

Pared Perez reported that the Political Committee appointed a commission to follow up on the discussions with the Dominican Revolutionary, and Social Christian Reformist parties and the organizations who are members of the Progressive Bloc, with the idea of achieving an electoral alliance.

The commissioners for the political negotiations will be Pared Perez, Alejandrina German, Carlos Amarante Baret, Felix Bautista and Danilo Diaz.

He also reported that the electoral Congress of the PLD will carry the name of Gladys Gutierrez, a PLD leader who recently passed away, and who was honored by a minute of silence at the start of the meeting.

Another decision by the Political Committee was that of giving its effusive support to the government for its fight against the international campaign to discredit the image of the country, and the proper application of the National Plan of Normalization of Foreigners.

Attendance

The meeting was attended by 32 of the 35 members of the Committee. Absent were Ramon Ventura Camejo and José Tomas Perez. Rafael Alburquerque came in a half hour before the end of the meeting, because he had a commitment to present a conference. The first issue was that of the reports, in which Cristina Lizardo gave a report regarding the activities which the PLD will carry out today, the Day of PLD Brotherhood, because they are celebrating the 106th anniversary of the birth of Juan Bosch.
