SCJ will hand down its decision in Felix Bautista case on 11 August
SANTO DOMINGO. After a process which lasted for more than eight hours, the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice reserved its decision on the appeal filed by the Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito, until 11 August. The Attorney General's appeal is against the decision of No Grounds (No Ha Lugar) in favor of Senator Felix Bautista and another six accused of alleged corruption and money laundering.

Judges Miriam German Brito, presiding, Frank Soto Sanchez, Esther Angelan Casasnovas and Juan Hirohito Reyes set the reading of their verdict for 10:00 a.m.

At the beginning of the process, the magistrates read a letter sent by the Justice First Foundation, requesting the inhibition of Soto Sanchez, Angelan Casasnovas and Reyes alleging that they had direct or indirect knowledge of the case.

But the petition was rejected because it was considered to be inappropriate.

The Attorney General represented by Carlos Castillo Díaz, Laura Guerrero Pelletier, Cármen Amézquita, Milcíades Guzmán, Wilson Camacho, Pelagio Alcántara, Narciso Escaño, Wagner Cubilete and Taipei Joa asked that the sentence of No Grounds be revoked.

Likewise, they requested that after accepting the request for an appeal, the court orders the opening of a trial and imposes coercive measures consisting in preventive custody against (Felix) Bautista, José Elías Hernández García, Bolívar Antonio Ventura Rodríguez, Carlos Manuel Ozoria Martínez y Grisel Araceli Soler Pimentel, Soraida Abreu Martínez and Bienvenido Apolinar Bretón Medina.

In the meantime the 13 lawyers of the defense of the seven defendants requested the tribunal to ratify the decree of No Grounds handed down on 27 March by the judge of Special Instruction of the SCJ, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra.

They suggested that the incidents for which the legislator and Secretary of Organization of the PLD was accused are the same which allowed the dismissals ordered by the then director of the Department for the Persecution of Administrative Corruption (DPCA), Hotoniel Bonilla.

The lawyers for the defense are Abel Rodríguez del Orbe, Pedro Balbuena, Juan Antonio Delgado, Marino Féliz, Manuel Ulises Bonnelly, Félix Damián Olivares, Carlos Olivares, Jorge Lora Castillo, Francisco Álvarez, José Luis González, Manuel Pérez and Joan Manuel Alcántara.
