Hillary proposes joint projects between DR and Haiti
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.- Chancellor Carlos Morales Troncoso said that the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, confirmed that her government is interested in the installation of twin plants in Haiti and the Dominican Republic that would create jobs.

The Minister of Foreign Relations, Morales Troncoso, said that Hillary Clinton argued for Dominican tourist businesses to invest in the construction of hotel complexes in Haiti, reassuring reporters that that country possesses all the necessary conditions for such projects.


He said that the government of the United States is very interested in that the Dominican Republic and Haiti develop jointly free zone, tourism and financial services projects, just as they did in the 70s and 80s.

The US secretary of State, who arrived in Santo Domingo at 6:35 yesterday evening from Port au Prince, Haiti, called herself, according to Morales Troncoco, a great ally and friend of the Dominican people and showed her interest in the development of the nation.

"She says that the United States are friends and allies of this country and it is a great honor for her to be here on an official visit now as an official of the United States government," said the Chancellor Morales Troncoso.

He said that the US official commented that the installation and construction of twin factories on the frontier and in Haiti would help in a significant way the creation of thousands of jobs, and this interests the United States.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, who welcomed the United States emissary at the Las Americas International Airport, said that he would write up a report on the points on which the United States can help execute projects between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

He said, "For example an incentive law was approve that permitted the creation of more than three thousand jobs by the Grupo M on the frontier and also in Port au Prince twin factories have been installed."

The Chancellor said that in addition through the Mixed Commission for the Dominican Republic-Haiti, a lot has been accomplished favoring the welfare of both nations and he called the visit by Clinton of great importance to the country.

Clinton will begin an intense agenda today, very early, at 7:00 a.m. in the Rosa Duarte School in the National District, where the Agency for International Development (USAID) is carrying out programs of cooperation.

At 9:50 a.m., Clinton will be received by President Fernandez in the Presidential Palace and they will have a meeting. During this activity, to which only the official press representatives will have access, it is probable that Clinton and Fernandez talk about issues such as drug trafficking, bilateral relations, the Summit of the Americas and the world economic crisis.

Later, at 11:00 a.m. the President and the high-ranking United States official will offer a press conference in the Ambassadors Salon. From there, Clinton will go to the Global Democracy and Development Foundation (Funglode) where she will hold an open forum with the press regarding the V Summit of the Americas.

Clinton, who travels in an United States Air Force plane, will leave tomorrow for Trinitad and Tobago to accompany President Barak Obama at the summit.
