LF criticizes inefficiencies of OAS and UN in Honduras
Samper says the starting point in Honduras is the reposition of Zelaya
SANTO DOMINGO. President Leonel Fernandez criticized once more the de facto government of Honduras, and argued for a rethinking of the compulsive character that the norms of the multilateral organizations should have, above all when it is dealing with the preservation of democracy.
He said that it seems inconceivable that in spite of the condemnation of the United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), of the African Union and the Arab League, Roberto Micheletti is still in place.
Fernandez maintains that this represents a problem of regional and global governance. "What are the multilateral institutions good for, if their decisions have no practical application" he asked. As Fernandez said, the letter of the OAS only has inefficient mechanisms, since there are no dispositions to put an end to the de facto regime of Micheletti.
As he gave the central speech at the international conversation "30 years of democracy" at the Global Foundation, Fernandez pointed out that the countries are faced with the challenge of making the letter of defense of the OAS make practical sense in Honduras. "Listen, the mess that has happened, is that the entire international community has be ridiculed; so much strength for so much inefficiency", he said.
In another tone, Fernandez expressed that there exists a "casino" for the sale of petroleum, which is controlled, not by market norms, but rather by the manipulation of the market itself, and this represents a threat to the economies of many nations.
Samper calls for the return of Zelaya
For his part, Ernesto Samper, the former President of Colombia, who also attended the activity, said that the starting point for Honduras should be through a democratic regime that begins with the return of overturned President Manuel Zelaya to power and then the celebration of presidential elections in November. In the regional conversation, that will end today, besides Samper, the former President of Panama, Martin Torrijos, the Vice President of Argentina, Julio Cobos and other personalities took part.
