CD will request regulations for standard form contracts for telecommunications

SANTO DOMINGO. The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved a resolution proposal by which they will request the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) and the National Institute for Protection of Consumer Rights (Proconsumidor) to regulate the terms and conditions of the standard-form contracts (also called boilerplate contracts) which are issued by the companies that offer telecommunication services to their clients.
Deputy Leivin Guerrer, the chairman of the Permanent Commission on Information and Communications Technology of the lower house, said that the interest shown by this commission is that the telecommunications companies rescind their contracts without the payment of penalties "as long as they are up to date on their payment obligations."
They also recommended that dispositions that allow the customers to have the option of choosing the time for ending the contract be established.
"This proposal has major importance for the Dominican population due to the scope of the benefits that the contract commitments between the service providers to the consumers represent, which are not fulfilled completely, since the adhesion contracts offered to the customers do not give them the option to rescind the contract," he indicated.
In another area, the Chamber of Deputies approved a resolution proposal through which they would designate with the name of Fermin Rosario the Primary and Intermediate School at La Caoba in the community of Porquero, in San Francisco de Macoris.
Likewise the deputies approved unanimously a resolution in which the outstanding pianist and composer Rafael Solano was recognized. To this end, the musician will be awarded a diploma of recognition during a special act that will be organized by the chamber.
In the meantime, they approved after a second reading a legislative initiative by which they will designate with the name of Professor Octavio Emiliano the Primary School at Barrio Punta de Garza in the Municipality of Hato Mayor.
A visit
The Environment and the Frontier Affairs commissions of the lower chamber agreed to carry out a visit on 12 and 13 June to the area of Lake Enriquillo to study the situation of the residents in the area.
The chairman of both commission, Ricardo Contreras and Jose Diaz, reported that they will request the government to provide a quick answer to the needs of the residents in Jimani, Boca de Cachon, Baitoa, Los Rios, Villa Jaragua and El Guayabal.
