Juan Luis Guerra named "Artist for Peace"

SANTO DOMINGO.- Singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra was honored by UNESCO's director general Koichiro Matsura and received the title of "Artist for Peace". Guerra is the first person from the Caribbean to receive this honor, and he said "I am a Guerra (‘war' in English) who loves peace," as he accepted the diploma that bears his name.

For the next two years, Juan Luis will place "his fame at the service of the ideals" of the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Guerra was visibly emotional as he received the distinction from Koichiro Matsura, the UNESCO director general during a ceremony yesterday afternoon in the Paris headquarters of UNESCO.

According to a report from Roger Zayas Bazán, a member of 440, there were about 200 people present at the ceremony, including the new Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier García, the vice-Minister of Culture, Avelino Stanley, and the Dominican ambassador to UNESCO, Laura Faxas.

Guerra told the audience that "over the years I have realized the deep commitment needed to love peace and to follow peace, since, like all things in this life, Peace has its price."

One of the most applauded moments of his accepted speech was when he said "I never imagined that Peace would be with me in each drop of coffee that fell like rain, or that it would be found in little farms, or horses, or bubbles or in wasps or is visas for a dream," all references to the songs that have made him a worldwide musical figure.
