OAS congratulates Danilo and Margarita for triumph
They said that they trust that the political forces approve the organic electoral law this year

SD. The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, congratulated yesterday the Dominicans, Danilo Medina and Margarita Cedeño de Fernande for their election victory.
In his final report on the observation of the process, released to the press by the chief of the commission of OAS observers, the former President of Uruguay, Tabare Vasquez, Insulza also greeted the contenders in the election process and the civility of the Dominican people.
The presentation of the report was attended by the US ambassador in the Dominican Republic, Raul Yzaquirre and the representatives of international agencies.
In the report the observers reiterated their congratulations to the members of the Central Electoral Board for the organization of the election process.
With the purpose of contributing to the strengthening of the election and democratic processes in the country, the OAS observers delivered to the JCE several recommendation, among which are to establish clear limits of the period of the electoral-political campaigns and the control of the financing and expenditures during the whole process.
They also want changes that will guarantee equal access for all the actors in the election to the media, promote female participation in the decision making process of the political parties and in the presentation of the candidates for election to high party positions.
They went on to suggest that the JCE take effective measures with regard to the reports of violence, the purchase of voter ID cards (cédulas) as well as votes themselves, and that they firmly apply the regulations regarding the carrying of firearms on election day.
Finally, the observers suggested that the JCE adopt criteria that cover the responsible use of the surveys and polls by the political actors.
