President Medina heads the Farmer's Day meeting

MOCA. President Danilo Medina headed yesterday in the city of Moca a large meeting with producers of farm goods, eggs, and livestock of the country in the celebration of the Day of the Farmer.
The activity, carried out in the sports arena of Moca, started at 10:40 a.m. with the arrival of the President who was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Ramon Rodriguez and other officials.
The welcoming speech was given by the governor of the province of Espaillat, Andres Dilone, who expressed his worry over the intensive use of farmlands in the area for residential projects.
"I am afraid that within 15 years our children will not have a piece of land where they can grow some crops," said the representative of the Executive Branch.
During the activity Margarity Garcia, one of the Chocolate producers of the Altamira Watershed (Chocal), also spoke, saying "this is the first time a President gives so much trust to his people."
Also speaking were the president of the Producers Association of the North Region, Apolinar Germosen, who took advantage of the presence of President Medina to ask him make arrangements for re-opening several rice mills, located in different points of the country that have remained closed since the last administration.
In addition he requested a loan that would improve and increase rice production.
For his part the Minister of Agriculture announced that the government would push a massive program of producing vegetables, and other products that would be exported to Venezuela to pay for part of the debt with that country through the Petrocaribe Agreement and he said that the country would be in condition to supply vegetables for petroleum.
He did not specify how much the government would invest for the program, which is projecting the harvesting of more than 100,000 quintals of black beans and also includes some 100,000 tareas (about 6300 hectares) of land in the South.
Within the framework of the activity, President Medina received several awards for his support of the farm sector, as was declared to be a "Distinguished Visitor" by the City Council of the city of Moca. At the same time various farmers and producers were also recognized.
After the activity, the President went to the hacienda of the farming businessman Victor Abreu who offered a luncheon for the President and his officials.
