The presentation of the report on Loma Miranda will be today

SANTO DOMINGO. In the midst of the expectations that have been created by the report regarding the environmental feasibility for the mining exploitation of Loma Miranda, the United Nations Development Program will release today its results, at ten o'clock this morning in the United Nations House.

Aside from the recommendations that this agency might give, yesterday a group of 20 senators signed a document in which they rejected any attempt to carry out any mining in the area. Signing the document were senators Félix Vásquez, Adriano Sánchez Roa, Manuel Paula, José María Sosa, Carlos Castillo, José R. Vargas, Euclides Sánchez, Amílcar Romero, Rafael Calderón, Wilton Guerrero, Juan O. Mercedes y Charlie Mariotti. También Luis René Canaán, Antonio Cruz, Arístides Victoria Yeb, Rubén D. Cruz, Yvonne Chahín, Amable Aristy and Eddy Mateo.

They said that "we accept as ours the perpetual defense of Loma Miranda. At the same time, we reject any attempt to carry out mining operations." They reported that they back the social movement in favor of preserving its natural resources and the initiative by Senator Euclides Sanchez to declare this a protected area in the category of a National Park.

The organizations that oppose Falcondo exploiting the mining operations in Loma Miranda say that they will occupy the area and they will pressure the government so that this area will be declared a National Park, if the report that is to be presented by the UNDP concludes that the mining project is environmentally feasible.

These were the expressions by environmentalists Luis Carvajal and Scarlett Gutierrez, from the Committee of United Communities for Water and Life, who said that if the report is unfavorable, the struggle will continue, but with the objective of revoking the mining permit and have the Loma Miranda declared a National Park.

For four month, technicians from the United Nations Development Program have, at the government's request, been carrying out research regarding the environmental feasibility of mining in the area.
