One dead and hundreds displaces in Cibao flooding
The rains will continue according to the National Meteorological Office
SANTIAGO. One person died by drowning in the province of Espaillat and more than 450 homes were affected In Puerto Plata and Santiago as a result of the flooding caused by the rains that have fallen in the area due to the two low-pressure troughs.
The fatality is a Haitian citizen, Lafeti Tenae, 25, who died by drowning according to the coroner's report.
The foreigner drowned when he was swept away by the waters of the Jamao River when he was going to his house in the community of Jamao al Norte, in the province of Espaillat.
The rains also have caused sudden flooding in the barrios in the lower parts of Puerto Plata and the cities of Tamboril, Villa Gonzalez and Santiago.
In the community of Los Rieles in Santiago, the flooding of the Gurabo Arroyo partially destroyed four houses, while the overflow from the Licey River flooded more than 100 houses in the communities of El Arenazo, Los Pozos and in the barrio Manolo Dajer in the municipality of Tamboril.
Among the persons affected by the rains is the woman Australia Diaz Polanco who lives on the banks of a creek in the Hoyo de Julia in Santiago.
"The bed of my children was flooded and it damaged my refrigerator, the television set and a computer," said Diaz Polanco.
The rescue and assistance groups of Santiago began a census in order to determine the magnitude of the damages.
The National Meteorological Office alerted the residents living on the banks of rivers and streams regarding the probability of more rains over the next days.
Green Alerts
The Commission for Emergency Operations (COE) issued a Green Alert for the provinces of Duarte (especially the Lower Yuna Basin), Santiago, La Vega Monsignor Nouel, Sanchez Ramirez, San Juan de la Maguana, Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, Puerto Plata and Hermanas Mirabal.
According to the COE, over the central portion of the Central Mountains, on the North Slope and in the Northeast, the rains have increased the flow of the North Yaque River, which has caused the displacement of 3,500 persons who have gone to the houses of family and friends. In additions, some 214 houses have been affected.
