Sandy leaves 21 dead in its path across the Greater Caribbean
HAVANA. Hurricane Sandy has caused at least 21 deaths as it crossed over Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba, where heavy rains and landslides were registered, while in the Bahamas and Florida are on alert.

Just in Cuba there were reports of 11 deaths, including a four month old baby, caused by landslides and falling trees, according to state television.

In Haiti, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe confirmed the death of nine persons and announced that the government was going to spend US$5 million within the next 48 hours to deal with the emergencies caused by the rains and flooding from Sandy. Another person died in Jamaica, crushed by his own house.

The National Civil Defense Staff of Cuba released a press communiqué that indicated that nine of the fatalities lived in the province of Santiago and two liven in Guantanamo.

"Regarding the human cost which occurred during the passage of Hurricane Sandy, in spite of the precautionary measures foreseen for these cases, the National Civil Defense Staff, reported the unfortunate deaths of eleven persons, of these nine residents in Santiago and two in Guantanamo," said the official note.

Some of these deaths were from serious head injuries or bodily injuries suffered in collapsing buildings or from falling trees.
