Three local universities ranked among best 300

SD. Among the 300 best universities that the international company Quacquarelli Symonds lists in its QS Latin American University Rankings 2013, are three Dominican universities. These universities achieved the rankings-although not among the first-and are the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra, the Iberoamericana University (Unibe) and the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

Both the UNIBE as well as the PUCMM achieved a position between the 201 and 250 best, while the UASD is located between 251-300, dropping a bit from the year before since in 2012 it was ranked between 201 and 250.

For the QS Latin American University Rankings 2013, they classified the 300 best institutions in the region, using seven indicators, including research, the professional insertion of its graduates, teaching resources and its presence on the Internet.

The top 300, published on the webpage topuniversities.com, says that the PUCMM and the UASD have limited research levels.

The UASD, which is state-owned, received a score of 33.80 in the section of web presence, the PUCMM 28.90 and the UNIBE 15.80.

Both the UASD as well as the PUCMM were also among the best universities in the region last year. On the other hand the UNIBE was not. In its place was the Central University of the East (UCE) which occupied a position among the 250 best, but does not appear in the 2013 rankings.

The QS Latin American University Rankings have been published since 2011, and that year there were no Dominican universities on the list.

Schools from other countries

The University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil, heads the ranking in 2013, for the third year in a row. A total of 81 Brazilian universities are included in the top 300, many more than any other nation.

The 300 best universities of Latin America are distributed in 19 countries: Brazil (81); Mexico (50); Colombia (42); Argentina (30), Chile (30), Perú (17), Ecuador (9), Venezuela (8 ), Cuba (5), Panamá (5), Costa Rica (4), Uruguay (4), República Dominicana (3), Guatemala (3), Paraguay (3), Bolivia (2), El Salvador (2), Honduras (1) and Puerto Rico (1).

In a press release, Ben Sower, the research chief for QS, indicated that "the universities in Latin America are going through a period of change."

"The increase in the demand for university education and a resurging economy are the principle cause of this development. The young universities are coming along by great leaps; 44% of the institutions in the top 300 were founded in the last 50 years," he said.

In the recently published world rankings by QS, by discipline, which presents the best 200 universities for 30 areas of study, there were three Latin American universities classified among the best 50 in philosophy, but none of them were listed in areas of science or technology.
