The Civil Defense director of the municipality of Castillo, Ramon Antonio Acevedo, reported that the injured receive blows to the head when the wall of the building they were in partially collapsed.

The injured were taken to the municipal hospital in Castillo and fixed up and released, so they are out of danger.

The earthquake also caused cracks in one of the hallways at the UASD extension in San Francisco de Macoris, causing panic among the employees in the administrative area of the university, and they ran scared from their offices.

In the meantime, the Civil Defense personnel in Santiago reported that the Fernando Valerio High School, the Justice of the Peace and an office of the city government of Villa Gonzalez suffered slight damage from the seismic shocks.

The earthquake also caused panic in the city of Nagua, where many persons ran out of their houses and places of work, while part of the city underwent a blackout for several minutes and this affected telephone communications.

In the meantime, the chief of the Nagua Fire Department, Noble Luna, reported that volunteers of the department carried out evaluations of several buildings and they reported damage to the school.

Seismology reports two earthquakes

After the occurrence of the 10:01 a.m. event of 5.1 on the Richter scale, the Seismological Institute at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) reported and other earthquake at 10:15 a.m. to the South of Bani in the Caribbean Sea.

The epicenter of the first plate movement was located six kilometers to the Southeast of Pimentel in San Francisco de Macoris (Duarte) and it was felt all over the East, in the capital, San Cristobal and in the Central Cibao. Due to the movement of the earth, office and government buildings were evacuated.

A short time later the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) sent the media a brochure with a list of recommendations to be taken in case of an earthquake. Some of them are the following:

-Be calm

-Do not go running out of a building; wait for it to pass

-Do not use elevators or escalators during the event

-Squat down and duck under a desk, table, bet of some other strong furniture, covering your head with your arms

-Stay away from windows, bookcases, heavy mirrors, or any object that might fall

-If you are in the street, stay away from trees, electric wires, and buildings. Walk, do not run

-If you are driving, stop the vehicle, avoid bridges, overpasses, telephone/electric poles

-After an earthquake, do not go back into the building until it is certified that the structure did not suffer any important damages; do not light matches or lighters; do not walk where there is broken glass and electric cables. If you are trapped, use a visible signal or sound to attract attention.
