CIDH will have hearing on case of Haitian deaths
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica. The Dominican Republic sat in the defendant's chair yesterday in the Inter American Court of Human Rights (CIDH) accused in the case of six Haitian immigrants that were killed, presumably at the hands of the Army twelve years ago.

The case is known as "Nadege Dorzema vs Dominican Republic" or "The Guayubin Massacre." This refers to the alleged shooting death of six Haitians during the dawn hours of 18 June 2000 along the Haitian frontier, when they were attempting to enter illegally the Dominican Republic in a truck. There were attempting to seek work in the DR.

The Haitian, Noclair Florvilien, one of the 37 immigrants that traveled in the truck, told the judges yesterday what happened and said that even today he has psychological and physical episodes that keep him from working in order to feed his seven children.

According to his story, the truck driver had made a deal with the military personnel on the frontier to cross with no problems, but when they came upon a checkpoint, the authorities began a persecution.

These events were judged by a military tribunal and after several years of deliberation, the personnel involved were absolved. The representatives of the Dominican state will present today their final arguments in the case which will bring the case to a close. The CIDH is headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica.
