Dominican Republic and Haiti on the way to renew commerce of poultry

Haitian official says, however, that there are obstacles to a commercial agreement

SD. "There are many obstacles for the development of a commercial agreement in the immediate future between the Dominican Republic and Haiti," such as immigration, and public safety, said the secretary of State for Animal Production of the neighboring country, Michael Chancy.

Nevertheless, he admitted that both countries are on the road to renew the commerce of farm products, according to an interview that was published yesterday in the Le Nouvelliste newspaper.

Chancy made it clear that this is not a commercial agreement, but rather simply a resolution regarding the product in question. He said that commercial agreements are extremely complex and can last as long as 10 years for put them into the proper form. He added that the ban on the import of poultry products that to not comply with the sanitary and animal health regulations of the WTO will be kept.

He said that commerce with the Dominican Republic will not be as before, since now the products cannot enter without health controls. According to Chancy, the Dominican companies that wish to export to Haiti, after the signing of the resolution, should have an international health certificate.

He said that if the companies comply with the standards of the WTO they could export their products to the Haitian market, but what this is all about is the have them comply with international standards.
