The courts free 79% of persons submitted by National Police

SANTO DOMINGO. The Justice Department only ordered preventive custody for 21% of the persons arrested and charged by the National Police during the one month period between 26 June and 26 July 2013.
In this period, the Central Directorate of Criminal Intelligence (Dicrim) charged and submitted, all over the country, a total of 2,191 persons accused of different crimes, of which the Justice system only remanded to custody 21%.
The "most popular" measures were periodic presentation at the court, which was applied to 35%; release by the Justice Department, 25%, and a bail bond was used in 19% of the cases.
And during January of this year, the National Police arrested and submitted2,502 persons to the action of the courts. Of this number, 47% were sent to preventive custody and 58% were released under different types of measures.
Those freed by the Justice Department continue to be a quarter of those arrested and submitted to the courts by the Police.
Most common crimes
Robbery in its different varities constitutes the most common crime in the country, according to the statistics of the National Police for the second half of 2013, from 26 June until 31 December.
Of the 12,258 persons arrested, 8,436 were for robbery. In detail, there were: 744 for vehicular theft; 271 for stealing animals, and 30 for the theft of patrimony, which total 9,481 economic crimes, or 74% of the total.
Next are homicides with 1,080, falsification of documents with 605, weapons trafficking 171, computer crimes 94, human trafficking 67, sexual abuses 58, arson eight and dealing in stolen merchandise, seven.
Firearms
The Dicrim recovered during the same period--June to December--1,163 guns, with October being the most productive month with 232 guns recovered.
This was followed by July with 191, September with 179, August with 177, November with 166 and December with 145.
