Mejia's group says he will be the candidate for the Convergence

SANTO DOMINGO. Although some are betting that the former President Hipolito Mejia will only be a "referee and sponsor" of the Convergence who will come to an agreement with his old running mate on the PRD ticket, Luis Abinader, in order to choose the presidential candidate of this political front, the scenery in this sector is confused.
"The leaders do not belong. The former President Hipolito Mejia is the person that could bring together the majority of the sectors that are against the PLD and Leonel Fernandez because he is seen as a leader and also as an option to reach power," said the Mejia spokesman, Hector Guzman, when asked about the idea that Mejia lead but not be the presidential candidate of the opposition front.
Guzman said that everything indicates that in the next elections there will be two former presidents competing: Mejia and the PLD president Leonel Fernandez.
"In each one of the marches and caravans that we have done, what come out is the slogan "Llegó Papá" (Papa is here), and now they have reinforced that by saying "I'm still with Papa" (Sigo con Papá)," he stressed.
He stressed that in the sectors that have approached the Convergence have done it because they see in Mejia the person that embodies the leadership to deal with the plans of the ruling party to stay in power.
Abinader and the sector that supports him says that as the emerging leader he should be the winning card of the Convergence, but they have not competed with the Mejia leadership, who they acknowledge is on top, but they are betting on his retirement and to inherit his platform.
