Hotel occupation approaches 100% on beaches and mountains
SANTO DOMINGO. The different tourist destinations of the Dominican Republic are showing a 100% occupation over the long Easter Week holidays, which is enjoyed by both national and international vacationers.

The reports from the National Association of Hotels and Restaurants (Asonahores), and the different tourist clusters show that the hotels, summer homes, villas, apartments and plazas in the mountains are using up their reserves and will be full to capacity by this Holy Thursay.

The La Romana and Bayahibe Hotel Association reported that they have approximately 4,000 rooms including those available in the member resorts of the Hotel Association and other smaller places in the area, all of which have an occupation rate of 100%.

The same situation is seen in the area of Puerto Plata where according to the president of the Tourist Cluster, Maximo Iglesias, they have 8,000 rooms in the region, under the all-inclusive system and another 5,000 apartments for rent along with condominiums, villas, summer places that are also at their maximum occupation.

"The hotels are now totally full, because we have has a very good high season at the international level and the few rooms that were available for the local market are also reserved," he noted.

In the meantime, the executive vice-president of Asonahores, Arturo Villanueva, said that since last Friday there is an excellent occupation by foreigners as well as locals.

"With the exception of the three or four thousand rooms in Santo Domingo, the rest (of the country) is practically full, and the tendency is to complete occupation," he stressed.

The rooms in the Dominican capital generally are not sold during this period, since it is not yet a tourist destination.

Villanueva recalled that at the present time the country is in the high season, which also contributes to the fact that the beach hotels are prepared to offer their services.

"We are in one of the highest peaks of the season, because during these days, since last Friday, we have an excellent occupation by foreigners, added to the travel by nationals," Villanueva said.

The mountains

Johnny Tactuk, the regional director of the offices of the Ministry of Tourism with headquarters in Constanza, pointed out that the occupation in general as of yesterday was over 90%.

"We hope to be at 100% for the weekend, but right now the occupation is going very well," he said.

Tactuk stressed that the same situation is in evidence in Jarabacoa, where the forecasts are also for a total occupation by Holy Thursday. In Constanza, the Tourism registries indicate that there are 400 cabins with offers to the public, and there are also private places that operate individually.
