Medina received the president of the Council of the European Union

SANTO DOMINGO. The presidents Danilo Medina of the Dominican Republic and Herman Van Rompuy of the Council of the European Union agreed to join forces to promote an increase in commerce, investment and the fight against organized crime.

The Dominican leader received Van Rompuy in the Presidential Palace, and they talked for more than an hour on diverse issues in the framework of the celebration of the 25th Annivrsary of cooperative relations between the DR and the European Union.

Later on, both men gave speeches during an act held in the Ambassadors' Hall.

Medina said that he appreciated the support offered by the European Union with actions that seek to reduce poverty. He indicated that the new phase of these cooperative relations identified two priority axis that are the support for the development of production and the formation of capabilities for quality employment.

"This support will be added to our strategy to back the Mipymes and strengthen the productive capacity of our people, especially in rural areas," he said.

He said that this is one of the objectives of the surprise visits that he carries out every weekend to communities that have already allowed him to see the first results in the reduction of poverty.

The President stressed that Europe has always been a model for the Dominican Republic which is seen when they are working to guarantee universal and free public services, when they think about quality education, health, solidarity and gender equality.

The relationship

For his part, the president of the Council of the European Union, Herman Van Rompuy, said that the 25th anniversary of the entry of the Dominican Republic into the Lomé IV Convention constituted an occasion without precedent to stress achievements and give a new push to the relations.

"We have seen that our bilateral relation is based on a joint commitment with democracy and human rights. We have decided that we will continue strengthening these commitments through regular political talks."

Among the challenges that the relation has to face, he mentioned an improved regional and inter-regional cooperation in the fight against organized crime, as well as the strengthening of the cooperation to deal with natural disasters.

He said that he agreed with Medina that the Economic Association Agreement, which was signed between the European Union and Cariforum, should be used to expand the economic relations.

He stressed that the greatest example of the effort that they are carrying out for the promotion of commerce is the National Indicator Program.

As they celebrate the 25 years of relation with the country, the European Union realizes that its ties do go back more than five centuries, as seen in the streets of the Colonial Zone.
