Forest fire in Constanza has affected more than 1000 "tareas"

CONSTANZA. It has been a week since the start of a forest fire in Valle Nuevo, and hundreds of firefighters battle the intense flames, which have destroyed more than a thousand ‘tareas" (a tarea is equal to 629 m2) of the forests of the mountain system.

The fire began last Tuesday 15 July in the afternoon, and since then it has been out of control in spite of the different units of the relief agencies from La Vega, Santo Domingo and San Juan de la Maguana that are trying to control the fire day and night.

According to information supplied by the Ministry of the Environment, the strong winds in the area an the drought that is affecting the area, have contributed to the spread of the fire.

Major Rafael Quiroz, the head of the Fire Department in Constanza, told Diario Libre that the department does not have the necessary equipment to deal with large fires, such as the one in his area.

It is being put out

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the fire entered into its last phase and they expect that the work will end this Thursday. In a press note sent to the media, the ministry said that two air units of the Dominican Naval Auxiliary were incorporated into the efforts to put out the fire.

At the present time more than 100 forest firefighters and other units are working to control the blaze.
