Medina and Martelly agree to work shoulder to shoulder for Haiti and the Dominican Republic
BAVARO. Dominican President Danilo Medina and his Haitian counterpart Michel Martelly, agreed yesterday in Bavaro to tighten the relations and work "shoulder to shoulder" for the strengthening of the two countries. The statement came at the end of the tri-lateral meeting that was sponsored by the European Union and which committed itself to continue supporting the development of the two nations.

President Medina said that it was a history-making meeting that closed the visit by Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the Council of the European Union, with a flourish. The EU has pushed for and sponsored many of the initiatives that are currently underway and that benefit both Haitians and Dominicans, said Medina.

"President Martelly, it is time to look each other in the eye, to shake hands, and to work shoulder to shoulder for the strengthening of each one of our countries," stressed the Dominican president.

Medina, after expressing his gratitude for the support of the European Union, asked for their support in opening two hospitals on the frontier that will permit the improvement in health services for the inhabitants of the two countries.

"In the same way, we hope to count on your support in the key areas such as the promotion of health and especially the reduction of the mortality rate in mothers and newborns."

Hereditary problems

President Michel Martelly said that it is not a coincidence that the two men are leading Haiti and the Dominican Republic and that they have inherited problems that go back hundreds of years.

"When I see your disposition, your commitment to solve those problems and I, too, have decided to resolve them, I believe that we have a great opportunity, and as I said in the meeting I think that we are going to achieve it," he said to Medina in front of the president of the Council of the European Union.

He said that the presence of the president of the Council of the European Union, Herman Van Rompuy, in Haiti and then in the Dominican Republic, is proof of their willingness to reinforce their cooperation with the two countries.

"Haiti is renewing its interest in the development of a fair, better organized trade with the Dominican Republic, and greets the recent signing of a protocol of understanding in this sense."

He indicated that Haiti confirmed its commitment to regulate the migrant workers by providing them with identification that clarifies and defines their nationality.

A signal

For his part, Rompuy, after congratulating presidents Medina and Martelly, for having encouraged the bi-national dialogues, said that the meeting yesterday was an important signal that the two nations are committed to strengthen their relations and resolve their problems through dialogue.

"We are prepared to increase our activity, as long as our Dominican and Haitian friends take further steps of cooperation," he said.

After greeting the Naturalization Law, he said that it is an important step in resolving such a delicate conflict.

"I believe that we all are in agreement that this is a worry that we share and which requires a humane solution," he pointed out.
