Three dead and 1495 persons displaced by Cristobal's rains
Meteorology forecasts a continuation of the rains

SANTO DOMINGO. The heavy rains associated with the cloud field of the tropical storm Cristobal have left at least three dead in El Seibo and the National District and more than 1495 persons displaced to the houses of family and neighbors and some 369 houses affected.
The Center of Emergency Operations (COE), which assured reporters that the fatalities awee not within its operation because these person had ignored the warning calls, identified the victims as retired Lieutenant Angel Osvaldo Fortuna Medina, who was carried away by a creek in the Los Rios sector of the National District; and Alfonzo Astacio, who died when he tried to cross the Arroyo Naranjo, in El Seibo. Diario Libre also identified Angel Familia Mejia, 40, who was carried away by a flooded creek in this sector of Arroyo Hondo.
Given the forecast by the National Meteorological Office that says the rains will continue across the national territory, the Center of Emergency Operations (COE) raised the alert level for the province of San Pedro de Macoris to red, and placed some 18 provinces and the National District on different levels of alert.
On yellow alert there are the National District and the provinces of El Seibo, Santo Domingo, Duarte, Hato Mayor, San Jose de Ocoa and Azua. At the same time the following provinces are on green alert: Monte Plata, Espaillat, Sanchez Ramirez, La Vega, Puerto Plata, La Romana, Samana, Maria Trinidad Sanchez, Santiago, La Altagracia, Barahona, and Pedernales.
In addition, there are warnings for areas such as El Talao, and the Batey Chirino in the province of Monte Plata and in Azua, the community of Los Negros, due to the flooding of the Arroyo El Rosario.
The COE director, General Juan Manuel Mendez, said that he expects flooding in the sectors next to the Ozama River, such as La Barquita, in East Santo Domingo. Mendez said that in these areas they issued a call for preventive evacuations, which is why the inhabitants of the heavily populated sector moved to other areas yesterday morning.
46 aqueducts out of service
The National Water and Sewer Institute (INAPA) reported that due to the rains 46 aqueducts are out of service in the provinces of Hato Mayor, San Pedro de Macoris, El Seibo, Monte Plata,, San Jose de Ocoa and Azua.
According to the deputy director and National Manager of the Operations Department, Nicolas Almonte, the aqueducts are out of service because of electric problems in the motors, starters, and by the collapse of transformers and electricity poles; they were also damaged by the flooding of the rivers and present several problems among which the high turbidity of the water and problems at the intakes.
In addition several urban floods were reported, principally in the Rosmil sector which affected 15 houses in North Santo Domingo and some 78 houses flooded in Arroyo Hondo.
