The Bishop of La Vega reminds President Medina that to respect is not to be humbled
LA VEGA. The celebration of Green Day which was convened for yesterday by the defenders of the preservation of Loma Miranda, brought together more than 2000 persons, in the majority students, in Duarte Park of La Vega, in front of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

During the activity, headed by the Bishop of the diocese of the province, Monsignor Antonio Camilo, and which had a major police presence, the criticisms of President Danilo Medina and his arguments to veto the law which declared Loma Miranda a National Park stood out. The Monsignor reminded the President that "being respectful does not mean humbling oneself," in reference to the concession contract which the Falconbridge Dominicana mining company has with the state, that Medina alludes to in his letter of observations to the Congress.

The prelate insisted that the mining companies come to exploit and to harm the natural resources, and that the country, since it is an island, cannot live without water. "They have a lot of land in Canada, they can go there," commented the cleric, after recalling that Loma Miranda is an legacy of God to the Dominican people which they have to protect.

He warned that this struggle will not stop and he called on all the parishes of his diocese to carry out actions in a peaceful manner. "There were those that believed that there would be violence, well there was none. As a pastor I cannot allow the wolves to harm the sheep," said Camilo, who on several occasions repeated: "we are not salaried pastors working for money, but rather we serve God and the church."

In the meantime, Euclides Sanchez, the senator for La Vega, said that the President was unfair and he called upon him to listen to the knowledge of the people. "Danilo Medina did not listen to those that fight for love of life and he only heard the merchants and the tradesmen," he said.

Also the former Senator and leader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) Ramon Alburquerque, called the document which vetoes the law on Loma Miranda a lie, as he pointed out that although the Constitution orders the beneficial use of the natural resources, Law 64 - 00 on the Environment orders that these resources not be exploited when there was doubt.

"Remember Mister President that you were my student of mining and I didn't teach you this (to lie), but rather to protect life," he commented.

The president of the Academy of Sciences, Milciades Mejia, defended the report they prepared on Loma Miranda for Congress, arguing that it was a well thought out scientific study, and he assured reporters that Miranda has more attributes then many national parks.

Taking part in the demonstration were the deputy Elpidio Infante, the president of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Andres Bautista; the president of the political movement Dominicans for the Change, Eduardo Estrella; Maria Teresa Cabrera, from the Dominican Teachers Association (ADP), Narciso Isa Condé, several cooperatives, neighborhood boards and many of the students of the Catholic schools. The next demonstration is set for 7 October when they will hold a Stations of the Cross procession from the Loma Miranda camp to the National Congress.
