Miguel Vargas Maldonado is the PRD presidential candidate
SANTO DOMINGO. The PRD elected yesterday Miguel Vargas Maldonado as its candidate for the presidency of this party in the electoral process to be held in 2016. The selection by acclamation was done after the approval of an extraordinary convention of a single point in the framework of the National Convention of Delegates. During the event the party also confirmed the results of the XXX National Convention Noel Subervi Espinosa with a presence, according to its organizers of 3608 delegates of the 4436 that were invited.

At the start of the National Convention they approved the modification of the statutes with relation to the election of the presidential and vice presidential candidates. This paved of the road and gave way to the announced selection of Vargas Maldonado as a candidate for the presidency. The proposal was supported by delegate Carlos Gabriel Garcia, while Eduardo Jorge Prats presided over the extraordinary convention. With his selection, Vargas Maldonado was also granted powers to decide who his running mate for vice president would be; in order to formalize electoral alliances in the name of the PRD with other political organizations; he was also given powers to complete the membership of the National Executive Committee; and to delegate in the political commission of the National Executive Committee the dates of the act of the proclamation of his candidacy for the presidency, which will be announced in the future.

After being sworn in as the reelected-president of the party with an 87% plurality and elected candidate to the presidency of the country, Vargas Maldonado "declared that the PRD would not accept the abandonment, but much less would they accept treason." In this sense he said "I have forgotten in order to pardon" although he recalled that "those that accused us of being a traitor, and 2010 were allies of another party in order to impede that the PRD could have a single Senator. And in 2011 they allied themselves also with many millions (of pesos), to the government in order to ignore the result of the party base. Then my comrades, the traitors to the party are precisely those that have accused me of being a traitor. Today we turn the page. Today, 14 September, we begin the construction of the party's victory," he decreed.

The Volleyball Pavilion of the Of Olympic Center did not have a working air conditioner. Julio Maqriñez lost his voice at one point because of the heat and the same thing happened with Vargas Maldonado who on several occasions throughout his speech took a moment to breathe. The activity had international political invitees and people from other local parties, among them former presidents Martin Torrijos, of Panama and Alvaro Colom of Guatemala. There were also representatives from Puerto Rico and Mexico. The get-together also served for local party leadership to announce, informally, their aspirations to public positions.

Among these, Julio Romero wants to be the mayor of East Santo Domingo; the Mayor Francisco Fernandez wants to stand for reelection in North Santo Domingo; and Virgilio Sport announced his desire to be a candidate for deputy.

Without incidence

The National Convention of Delegates was held without any inconveniences. It will be recalled that there were several violent incidents during the recent voting for the party president. It will also be recalled that on 27 January 2013 there were serious incidents at the National House of the PRD, when several persons were injured and the place remained in the hands of the Police after armed confrontations between groups that at that time belong to the organize a should. This week the J CE accepted the change of the names of the Dominican Social Alliance (ASD) for that of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), made up by those that abandoned the PRD whether of their own will or suspended or expelled from the party, with which this chapter is apparently closed.
