The prosecutors stay firm regarding strike call for today

The Finjus said they totally back the work stoppage

SD. The prosecutors are staying firm regarding their intention to carry out today, starting at 9:00 a. m., a national work stoppage of all their activities, which includes not going to the rostrum in the tribunals, in demand of a larger budget for 2015 and a salary increase. The demonstration is being convened by the "Movement for Dignity for the Justice Department of the Dominican Republic," which brings together the majority of the prosecutors.

They allege that they have received information that the budget amount for the current year of RD $3.3 billion is going to be assigned for 2015, when they should receive RD $8.8 billion.

The Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) said that it is totally in agreement with the work stoppage.

The representatives of the Justice Department will declare with signs the crude reality that they daily experience, in spite of the responsibility that they have to carry out.

Pedro Amador Espinosa, one of the spokesmen, said that the fundamental basis which feeds, pushes and makes it necessary for this manifestation to take place, is the need, which does not admit any delay or wait, for the assignment of the budget which is required and which the law demands.

He said that 17 provinces are fully backing today's demonstration, with 17 district attorneys that have openly stated that they favor the work stoppage.

He said that the Justice Department lacks the necessary logistics to fulfill its role.

He cited the fact that they do not have a Specialized Judicial Technical Police, or Kevlar vests or life insurance or housing plans.

In February 2013 the prosecutors received a salary increase from RD $60,000 to RD $69,000 a month. The prosecutors of Courts received increases from RD $85,000 to RD $97,000 a month.

At the same time the deputy attorneys general receive RD $166,750 in comparison with the RD $145,000 that they used to receive.

"Law 194 - 04 assigns the budget which should be given to the Justice Department so that it can comply with its role, with its function," said Amador.

He said that in concrete terms what they are talking about is 1.77% of the General Budget of the State.

He said that only 37% of the last three years of this amount has been sent to the Justice Department.

"Given this situation, everything that was the dream of the people that live on their salary as employees of the Justice Department, and who are honored by this office, do not see the need to be, regrettably, having to look at sectors of the private market, because precisely with the salary that we receive, that is not minimally sufficient so that one can cover his most basic necessities."

Amador noted that during the work stoppage, assistance will only be given to the situations which will not admit any delay such as the victims of gender violence or family violence.

The Finjus backs the prosecutors

The executive Vice President of the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus), Servio Tulio Castaños Guzmán, said that the prosecutors are claiming a right that by law belongs to them. "They are hoping that the Justice Department will be more efficient against organized crime, the struggle against corruption and everything that they bring to court and then they don't want to give them what the law says they should have." He suggested that they have to see under what conditions the prosecutors are working, that don't even have security personnel and the majority did not even have a vehicle.
