Attorney General says homicide rates are down in the country

SANTO DOMINGO. The Attorney General of the Republic, Francisco Dominguez Brito, reported yesterday that the occurrence of homicides fell from 18.6% to 16.2% in the first eight months of the year, with which the country achieves its lowest rate in the last 10 years. In a press conference, he pointed out that in the January - August. 1201 cases were registered, which translates to 107 deaths less than during the same period of 2013, when there were a total of 1308 bloody incidents.
The chronology of the events are 145 homicides in January, 128 in February, March showed 189, April 162, May 150, June 123, July 149 and August 155.
He cited that during this period of 2013 there occurred 184 in January, 138 in February, March showed a total of 153, April 176, May 158, June 169, July 155 and August 180.
Dominguez Brito expressed his satisfaction with these results.
"What is most important and what we want to stress is that over the last 10 years, at this moment the Dominican Republic has that lowest homicide rate in its history," he stressed.
He explained that the five provinces where the homicide rate is highest are El Seibo, with 28 per 100,000 inhabitants; Espaillat with 22; Independencia with 30; Pedernales was 27.4 and Peravia with 29.
At the same time the three provinces which register the least number of homicides per 100,000 inhabitants are Azua with 10.12, Sanchez Ramirez with 8.6 and Valverde with 10.6.
