Eleven children die in Robert Reid Hospital over the weekend

Some doctors reacted with alarm on the number of deaths

SANTO DOMINGO. Eleven children with different pathologies died over the weekend at the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital, where the central oxygen system suffered a breakdown and the 2 elevators were out of service, which delayed the installation of oxygen tanks.

Nonetheless, the director of the hospital, Rosa Nieves Paulino, said that at no time was there a lack of oxygen for the children, because the doctors on duty used manual respirators.

She assured reporters that the health situation of the children was serious and that the referrals and hospitalizations had intensified over the last three days.

The children had been entered into the intensive care and pediatric areas and seven of them were diagnosed with severe infections and other complications. Another child had a heart condition.

Two of the babies were reported dead last Friday; four died on Saturday and five on Sunday.

In the group there were three newborns, five babies of less than a year and the others were older than a year. The situation attracted the attention of doctors at the hospital, who said that their highest number of deaths that they had seen was seven, and in moments of crisis.

"Eleven, oh my God and what happened!", Was the reaction of some doctors when they became aware of what they define as a very high mortality rate.

The patients came from San Cristobal, Samana, Peravia, sun Pedro de Macoris, Azua, Elias Piña and Greater Santo Domingo.

Yesterday afternoon the Minister of Public Health, Freddy Hidalgo Nuñez, visited the hospital to verify this situation regarding this mortality in the hospital.
