A commission investigates deaths of the 11 children at Robert Reid Cabral Hospital
SD. For more than six hours, representatives of the Attorney General's office, the National Police and the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) interviewed the medical personnel as well as the support staff which worked last weekend at the Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital. This was the beginning of the investigations in order to determine the real cause of the deaths of 11 children at that hospital.

Virgilio Peralta, the general prosecutor of the Court of Appeals; Joselito Ceron Rivera, the adjunct prosecutor; Francisco Gerdo, the director of Inacif, and general Cesar Sena Rojas, the director of the Department of Criminal Investigations (DiCrim) were selected by their superiors, who President Danilo Medina had appointed as a commission in order to determine the reality of the case.

The investigators also interviewed Guillermo Perez, the president of the Lindegas Company, which supplies oxygen to the health center.

At the end of the interrogations, after 2 o'clock in the afternoon, they went to the offices of the National Health Insurance (Senasa) with the medical records of the patients, in order to support the report that they delivered to the director of the entity, Altagracia Guzmán Marcellino, also designated by the President on the commission, who in her condition as a pediatrician, will audit the case files and give her conclusions to the chief of state.

Opinions

Representatives of national and international agencies, as well as the President of the Dominican Society of Pediatricians, Rodolfo Soto Ravelo, gave their opinions regarding the situation which has attracted the public's attention.

Soto Ravelo said that it is necessary to maintain and modernize the equipment, fix up the infrastructure and have the economic subsidy delivered on time and goes beyond the needs of the hospital.

For the director of the National Institute of Health (Insalud), Giselle Scanlon, the deaths of the children demonstrate the deficiencies which the hospitals of the country face in general.

In the meantime, the United Nations System in the Dominican Republic greeted the investigation of the case which was ordered by President Danilo Medina.

Father demands explanation

Carlos Danielle Santos returned yesterday to the Robert Reid Hospital where his four-month old daughter died last Sunday.

He arrived at noon from Padre las Casas, in Azua, to demand an explanation from the hospital director, as he found out through the media that the death of his daughter could have been because of a breakdown in the oxygen system. His daughter had been in the hospital for four months, because of problems of taking food.
