Chamber of Deputies will give the RD $75 million that it spent on toys to the health sector

Some deputies greet the measure, but others question it and called it illegal

SD. The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Abel Martinez, announced the elimination of another of the accounts that the deputies handle for presents. Yesterday he decided to send the RD $75 million that they spend on the purchase of toys to be given on Three Kings Day to the health sector.

Already on Tuesday of last week during the ordinary session, Martinez had announced the elimination of the money belonging to the Social Management Fund, also known as the "little barrel", for which purpose the deputies had been assigned RD $114 million pesos in the 2015 budget.

The President of the Chamber, who once again recalled that criticisms that had been made regarding the legislators (the existence and use of the "little barrel" is one of the most questioned issues) assured the chamber that he is acting without pressure and that he is firm in his decision. "I am not acting by impulse." He said that he does not favor sectors and that his decisions are not because of the occasion but rather the product of his own reflections.

The RD $75 million for the presents were handled by the Chamber which then delivered the articles to each deputy; this was different from the "little barrel" which was distributed through payments of RD $50,000 to each deputy each month.

This year the money for the toys had been spent on a salary increase for some RD $108 million which the Chamber of Deputies ordered for its administrative personnel.

Reactions

As with the previous time, the deputies greeted the measure, but on this occasion they heard some voices against it which felt that this is not a decision that can be taken individually by the President of the Chamber. José Santana, the deputy for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) said that he felt that the decision is illegal, because it should be taken by the full body of the chamber. Nelson Guillen said he was not in agreement because of the unilateral manner in which Abel Martinez has acted.

Others, such as the national deputy Guadalupe Valdes greeted the decision. The same was done by Tulio Jimenez, who felt that it made the Chamber of Deputies more transparent. The spokesman for the PRM, Nelson Arroyo, not only greeted the measure but also called on all the entities that handle resources for social work to imitate the deputies and put these resources at the disposition of the Executive Power so that he can send them to the neediest sectors.
