Chancellor will control opinions of Dominican diplomatic Corps

SANTO DOMINGO. The Minister of Foreign Relations, Andres Navarro, will filter the opinions issued by his diplomatic Corps to the media, to judge by what is ordered in circular 128/14 of this ministry.

In the document addressed to ambassadors and permanent representatives of the Dominican Republic overseas they are told that, "by instructions of his Excellency Andres Navarro Garcia, any publication in newspapers and media require his approval."

The communication, dated 21 November 2014 is signed by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Policy Affairs, Alejandro Liriano de la Cruz and in the letter it is specified that this is a reiteration of the request of approval by the Chancellor "for the publication of articles in the press."

In the letter it is not specified whether the "filter" of Chancellor Novato will apply only to issues belonging to the country's foreign policy, or if the ambassadors also have to ask for his permission in order to give opinions on questions appropriate to their knowledge or person.

It will be recalled that recently the Dominican ambassador in Spain, Anibal de Castro, publicly expressed his worry for what he called a campaign of disinformation sponsored by the Robert F Kennedy Foundation against the country, in relation to the issue of nationality and the Haitian migration.

Castro is a contributor to the Diario Libre, where he publishes articles of opinion on diverse issues, and is one of the most active ambassadors in the defense of the country as a result of the debate over the sentences by the Constitutional Tribunal which establishes the criteria's for granting nationality, as well as that from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Another ambassador who also publishes regularly in the media is Cesar Medina, who up until a short time ago was in Spain, and was recently appointed in Panama. With less frequency, ambassador Luis Arias, appointed in Argentina also writes opinion pieces.

Other members of the diplomatic and consular personnel write in both written and digital media.
