Discussion of the electricity pact begins
SD. The Minister of the Presidency, Gustavo Montalvo, said last night that the electricity sector cannot continue being a bottomless well into which we throw family and State money.

He said in addition that maintaining the electricity supply system functioning in the present conditions represents a great sacrifice for the country both in economic as well as social material which cannot be permitted.

Montalvo made these statements as he gave the keynote speech in the opening activity of the process of discussion of the National Pact for the Reform of the Electricity Sector, called by President Danilo Medina by means of decree 389 - 14. He assured the audience that the electric energy "has been treated as political merchandise, and a lucrative business and as a service that nobody can pay for and few times as a public asset and the strategic priority which it should be."

In the meantime, Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, the chairman of the Economic and Social Council (CES) said that the situation of the electricity sector has occupied considerable efforts and long hours of work of all the governmental administrations since 1966, without achieving the goal of having reliable permanent electricity at a reasonable cost.

Meanwhile, Iraima Capriles, the executive director of CES, explain the methodology that would be used in the process of consultation, which will have 6 phases over a period of 6 months.

She cited the phases of approval of the general methodology, the start of consultations (via Internet with experts and territorials), discussions, consultation, signing, and follow-up. The consultations will end on 30 June and the signing is planned to be carried out between 19 or 20 July.

The act was held in the Juan Bosch Auditorium of the Pedro Henriquez Ureña National Library and was attended by the actors invited in decree 389 - 14. The webpage of the process, www.pactoelectrico.do, was presented. This webpage contains the "Governmental Proposal for a reliable, efficient, transparent and sustainable electric system" which was agreed upon by the public sector for consultation and discussion.
