Metro demand increases 800%; it contributes RD$1.4 billion to state
SD. The deputy director of the Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (Opret) Leonel Carrasco, said that the demand by riders on the Santo Domingo Metro has grown by more than 800%, and the yearly contributions to the State by this rail infrastructure have risen to more than RD$1.4 billion.

He indicated that the service began with a contribution from the government of US $25 million a year, but this amount has been reduced by about 35%. He revealed that in 2014, the government disbursed around RD$750 million for maintenance and operation of the infrastructure. "But the Metro sends the government around RD $1.4 billion each year, which means that we are doubling the amount that the government gives us, because this subsidy or support that is given the people receive as a savings," he said.

Interviewed by journalist Federico Mendez on the television program "Spheres of Power." which is broadcast on Sundays from 5:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon by Santo Domingo TV, he said that the Metro moves an average of 210,000 passengers a day from Monday through Friday.

This means that the first Metro line, which has 16 stops in its 14.5 km, has given marvelous results, carrying up until now 170 million passengers, since it was inaugurated on 29 January 2009. He pointed out that they had to prepare another 14 stops for this stretch which covers the area between the Quinto Centenario Corridor, the east part of the city, the San Vicente de Paul Avenue, the Duarte Highway and the John F. Kennedy Avenue.

The second line

Carrasco predicted that if the resources continue flowing as until now, the 2nd Line of the Metro will be functioning in its test phase for 2 or 3 months in the year 2016. He stressed that the Government of President Danilo Medina has set aside for this year 2015, within the General Budget of the State, around RD$4.0 billion for this project.

He said that there have been nearly 600 families evicted, both on the riverbanks of the Ozama as well as in the area of the Gualey barrio, and they did the same with another 44 houses, with a total of 78 families, which is been done peacefully, as they pretend to do with another 300 houses.
