SANTO DOMINGO. The Pedro Henriquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) held a meeting yesterday with the authorities from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT)and the Ministry of Public Health, with the aim of creating an atmosphere of "relaxation" between both ministries, with respect to the issue of the medical residencies.

"Because one without the other does not work, but rather in a coordinated manner, in order for this to work adequately," said the Dean of the Health Science Faculty of the University, José Asilis Zaiter.

In this sense, he explained that the medical residency programs are designed by the universities, and recognized by the MESCYT. Likewise, that the residencies are carried out in the hospitals, which are managed by Public Health.

This means that both ministries participate directly in the training of the medical resident," he stressed.

Asilis Zaiter assured reporters that an understanding is needed between both institutions, in order to achieve proper regulation of the program of medical residencies.

A strike announced

The President of the Dominican Medical College (CMD), Pedro Sing, announced a national work stoppage in all the public hospitals for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, over the negative by the authorities of the Health Science Faculty at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) to reduce and make more flexible the payments for the drafts of thesis and tuition for the medical residents.

Sing reported that during the work stoppage, they would only attend emergencies and patience in a critical state.

"They will say that this is a problem with the UASD, but let us not forget that it is the state University which is related with other minister area of dependencies of ministries; it belongs to Level I of residences and to the National Council of Medical Residencies, and when we are cornered we know how to use our trenches," warned Sing.

Regarding this case, Doctor Jorge Martes Baez, a representative of the Ministry of Public Health, said that the strike is a mistake, because it affects health services, over a conflict of medical residents and the UASD.
